hey guys,

i just noticed my M1's op rod has some pretty sizable chips just below the piston. i've yet to fire this rifle, and am now wondering if i should get a new op rod before i do?

Go shoot it and see what happens. The worst that can happen is that it fails to cycle and feed properly. It won't damage the rifle, and if it works, there's no point in spending the money for another op rod.

I love my M1 rifle. Breakable parts are easily replacable in the field. The op-rod in my play/shooter rifle looks like the gut on a fat guy getting shot with a cannon ball in slow motion. Solid waves. Perhaps art? I don't know, but it's wavey. I've constantly thought I should replace it, but 13 years later, it still functions flawlessly. Good news on an M1...don't repair until it doesn't function.

I am trying to imagine what that must look like:
